The keys to being a successful femtrepreneur
Earlier this year, I read #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso for some feminine inspiration. In case you don’t know who Sophia Amoruso is, Amoruso is an American businesswoman who started the multi-million dollar fashion company, Nasty Gal, at age 23 from her laptop. After trying her hand at multiple jobs but not finding much luck, she decided to make her own.
I’m currently 23 and I’ll be the first one to admit, I’m still a bit lost and can’t even imagine owning a company at this point in my life. But the #1 step to being a Girlboss Femtreprenuer is showing up.
When I think of a Girlboss Femtrepeneur, I imagine a strong, independent professional woman who embodies motivation and change. Also, has great fashion taste and intimidates you a little. I’d like I’m on my way there… (but then again my friends would laugh if my name was in the same sentence as intimidating). My Bumble profile reads, “I will never put you before my career or dog”.
So, what makes a successful Femtreprenuer?
“A #GIRLBOSS is someone who’s in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it. As a #GIRLBOSS, you take control and accept responsibility. You’re a fighter – you know when to throw punches and when to roll with them. Sometimes you break the rules, sometimes you follow them, but always on your own terms. You know where you’re going but can’t do it without having some fun along the way. You value honesty over perfection. You ask questions. You take life seriously, but you don’t take yourself too seriously. You’re going to take over the world, and change it in the process. You’re a badass.”
Make yourself a priority
As a Femtreprenuer, you need to learn to put yourself first. It’s not selfish or heartless but what you deserve! I’ve put my own goals and happiness on the backburner for others so many times when instead I should have been at the top of my to-do list from the start. Life isn’t about pleasing others, rather finding your own growth and success. Plus, the more you care about yourself, the more you can care for others.
I feel like 2017 was the year of ‘self-care’. There have been numerous articles, videos, and various content about the importance of being good to yourself. Sleep well, eat well, live well, etc. You need to take care of your physical self for your mental self to be at peak. (As the contrary.) Like my grandmother always told me, you cannot pour from an empty cup.
And when you finally start seeing your worth, you’ll find it harder to stay content. The rest will follow.
Surround yourself with positivity
Do not expect positive change in your life if you surround yourself with negative people. Femtrepenuers pick their inner circle carefully. You should create a squad full of individuals who inspire you and lift you up. Leave toxic people behind in 2018. Your environment will influence your experience.
The biggest set-back is when women treat other women like competition. It is already difficult enough for a woman to succeed in the business world… we should be empowering one another! Stand with other women, not against them.
Personally, I need to work on this. I’m a timid person and very rarely speak up. Confidence is so important to your success! Confidence isn’t just about the way you look but you also need to be confident in your ideas, speech, and relationships. To be a girl boss, you first gotta believe you ARE a girl boss! Live the life you’ve imagined and it will become real.
Like I said previously, you need to know your worth and from there you’ll be confident in your decisions. Even if you’re unsure about something –if you act confident, others will trust you and follow.
You’ll also be less afraid to leave your comfort zone. When you’re afraid, confidence will exclaim… who cares what they think? So what if I fail?
“It’s cool to be kind. It’s cool to be weird. It’s cool to be honest and to be secure with yourself.”
― Sophia Amoruso
This may seem like a harsh reality but the woman you’re becoming will come at a cost. Whether that’s friends, money, unexpected life changes, etc. You will have to make sacrifices. But if you believe in yourself, you know the sacrifices will be worth it.
Along the way, don’t worry about others think of your journey. People’s opinions are just roadblocks. Stay focused on the destination! (Don’t let yourself get distracted by cute stinky boys, online bullies, or all play and no work.)
Remember that not everyone deserves your attention, energy, and time!
Good things come to those who… hustle!! You should be waking up every day ready to take over the world. All the sacrifices you’ve made won’t matter unless you reach your goals!
I think it’s funny when people say how “lucky” someone is to be so successful. They weren’t lucky, they worked hard to be where they are! A true Femtrepenuer gives it her all. Through the roadblocks, failures, and trials, she’ll turn them into opportunities to grow and be better. Even when she’s exhausted, feeling defeated, or overworked, she’ll keep moving forward. There’s no other direction.
Sophia Amoruso worked every damn day in her 20’s. Before there were fashion buyers, retail workers, photographers, and models, there was only her.
“There are secret opportunities hidden inside every failure.”
― Sophia Amoruso
