A-List Inspiration: The No-Makeup Look
In the sea of artistic makeup trends we’ve seen on this year’s runways, from electric and eclectic as well as pastel eyes rocked in Milan, to the imperfectly perfect smudged eyeliner in Paris, it has never been more difficult to embrace (and master) a particular makeup trend. Still, shows such as Chloe and Michael Kors have reaffirmed my love of the natural no-makeup look.
Seeing Gigi and Kendall, the current supermodel power duo, rock the bare minimum on the catwalk, I realized that there is no better inspiration than the A-list approved one! So, I have decided to stick with this look and learn a trick or two to bring it to an entirely new level. The trickiest part of this next-to-nothing look is that it actually entails quite a number of products and steps. It only seems effortless as a lot of dedication is put into it. I have done my very best to master it, and as sharing is caring, I am happy to share my tips on how to look healthy, radiant and effortlessly striking.
The key ingredient(s)
In order for you to pull this look off like a reigning queen of the runway, your face needs to be sparkling clean, healthy and well looked after. Great effort must be put in nurturing your skin. So having fantastic cleansers, toners, serums or oils and moisturizers in your skincare arsenal is paramount to achieving a great complexion! Take care of your precious skin every morning and evening; this should be a ritual that is never skipped. Once your face is impeccably clean, you can proceed with applying makeup.
Prepare to dazzle
As the no-makeup makeup look is most suitable for daytime, you want to make sure everything stays in place and endures all the daily obligations and weather conditions. Personally, I have struggled with keeping my foundation from melting or simply disappearing until I found the perfect little miracle in a bottle – the mighty primer.
A great primer can do wonders as it ensures that your makeup stays put and doesn’t wander away. I apply primer with my hands, like you would apply moisturizer, and wait a minute or two before continuing with foundation. I always choose low to medium coverage because it allows the skin to breathe. It serves the no-makeup makeup look perfectly because it’s not cakey, doesn’t clog the pores and is practically invisible. If you have flawless skin, you can skip the foundation and just go with a BB cream. If your skin tends to get oily during the course of the day, always keep a powder foundation close by.
Shine bright, but subtle
As I am fair skinned, almost like a porcelain doll, I have learned from makeup experts that bronzer will do me no favors. Instead, I have turned to subtle highlighters. If you don’t have a highlighter, just use a pearly beige shimmery eye shadow. It does the trick almost as good. I apply it on the parts that would naturally catch light – the top of the cheekbones, and a touch on the temples, the tip of my nose and my Cupid’s bow – it does wonders for your pout!
My absolute favorite is the one by The Balm, but you can test the waters and see which one works best for your skin tone. The use of highlighter is very important for getting that healthy glow, so this is a step you don’t want to skip. Blush is also one of the products that should always find its way into your beauty routine. As one of the most esteemed makeup artists of today, Pat McGrath states: “It’s the fastest way to create the illusion of those high cheekbones we all lust after, and nothing gives more life to tired skin than blush.” The key is finding your perfect shade.

Eyes wide open
The secret weapon to eyes that never look tired is a white eye pencil. Softly line your lower lid with a whitish nude pencil and diffuse it with a blending eyeshadow brush. Then, swirl the same brush over your liner’s tip and apply it to the inner corner of your eye. Applying highlighter on the inner corners of the eyes works like a charm as well. Just take your pick; you can’t go wrong either way! Add a coat or two of mascara (don’t overdo it) and your eyes are ready.
Always comb the eyebrows and use a brow pencil to fill them in. If you have been blessed with Cara Delevingne brows, you can get away with a simple comb and go routine. The final and perhaps trickiest step is finding the right lip color. My perfect choice is a pearly pale pink – it’s almost like a lip balm with a hint of color. Depending on your skin tone, you can go from pink and coral nudes to beige and brownish ones.
Your work is done, now pat yourself on the shoulder, snap a selfie and you are good to go, all natural and gorgeous.
